Patrick Stewart, Iconic Star of Star Trek and X-Men, Dies at 86

The world of stage and screen mourns the loss of Sir Patrick Stewart, who passed away Wednesday at his Los Angeles home at age 86. His longtime spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, confirmed the actor died following a poignant battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, surrounded by his family.

Stewart leaves behind a legacy defined by two of popular culture’s most enduring figures: Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek franchise and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film series. Despite his eventual success, Stewart famously recalled that industry insiders initially warned him the Star Trek revival would fail to survive its first year. He signed a six-year contract based on that grim advice, yet he went on to anchor the series and cement his place in television history.

His transition to the big screen brought further acclaim through his nuanced portrayal of Professor Xavier, a role he inhabited across multiple films, including the gritty 2017 conclusion Logan. Marvel Studios honored the late actor on social media, describing him as a singular talent and a true gentleman whose intelligence brought humanity to the character. Stewart’s final cinematic appearance is slated for the upcoming release of Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled to hit theaters this December.
