Campaigning for Republican candidate Mike Rogers, Cruz suggested that if Democrats regain the Senate majority, El-Sayed could be appointed to the Senate Intelligence Committee. He alleged, without evidence, that the candidate is a supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, declaring there is a real risk that Americans will die if he takes office. Beyond these claims, Cruz derided El-Sayed as a "jihadist leprechaun," a remark that drew sharp rebukes from across the political spectrum.
Critics labeled the rhetoric dangerous and opportunistic. Luke Nicastro, a senior editor at the American Conservative, stated that Cruz would say anything for political gain, while former Bernie Sanders aide Matt Duss accused the senator of direct incitement. The incident is part of a broader trend in the Michigan contest, where Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have also faced condemnation for launching similar attacks on El-Sayed’s background, religion, and family.
