Brian Friedman on the Instinctive Magic Behind Britney Spears’ Iconic Moves

At 19, Britney Spears transformed pop choreography into a personal signature during the filming of “I’m a Slave 4 U.” Reflecting on the 25th anniversary of the track, choreographer Brian Friedman recalls a creative process fueled by youthful fearlessness and a refusal to turn the superstar into a copycat.

Speaking at the 2026 Industry Dance Awards in Los Angeles, Friedman described the 2001 collaboration as a rare moment of creative flow. While he and fellow choreographer Wade Robson provided the framework, the goal was never to force Spears into a rigid style. Instead, they aimed to craft movements that felt like an extension of her own freestyle, allowing her natural charisma to dictate the visual identity of the project.

Friedman, who was only 23 at the time, admits he approached the work with a sense of "healthy delusion" that is often lost with age. Unlike his current, more methodical process, the creation of the “I’m a Slave 4 U” routine was rapid and unburdened by second-guessing. This confidence proved vital during a pivotal transition in Spears’ career, as she moved away from her earlier sound toward a sharper, more mature image.

The professional bond established during that shoot flourished for years, leading to collaborations on tracks like “Toxic” and “Till the World Ends.” Looking back, Friedman credits the success of their early work to a mutual trust that prioritized the performer’s instincts over technical perfection. By treating the choreography as a vehicle for her personality rather than a static set of steps, they captured a moment of pop history that remains distinct two decades later.
