Jeff Garlin Details Mental Health Crisis Following The Goldbergs Exit

Years after his abrupt departure from the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs, comedian Jeff Garlin is speaking candidly about the severe mental health crisis that followed. The 64-year-old actor revealed that the turmoil surrounding his 2021 exit brought him to a breaking point, leading to a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and a period of intensive treatment.

During a conversation on the podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name, Garlin told host Ted Danson that the stress surrounding his exit from the series triggered a nervous breakdown. At the height of the crisis, Garlin reached out to his Curb Your Enthusiasm co-star Susie Essman, who coordinated with his family and friends to ensure he received immediate help. He eventually checked into a treatment facility in Cincinnati, Ohio, opting to distance himself from the Hollywood environment while undergoing dialectical behavior therapy.

His departure from the show, where he played patriarch Murray Goldberg since 2013, followed a three-year human resources investigation into his conduct on set. While he previously disputed allegations of physical misconduct, the actor now views that period as a profoundly dark chapter. Garlin credits his recovery to a combination of therapy, boxing, creative projects, and the support of his inner circle. Reflecting on his journey, he noted that he has only recently begun to feel truly content, emphasizing that public figures are not immune to the same mental health struggles faced by their audiences.
