Bessent Ties Trump’s New Tax Law to Social Security Privatization

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that investment accounts established under the Republican-led One Big Beautiful Bill Act serve as a backdoor for privatizing Social Security. The admission contradicts recurring campaign pledges from President Donald Trump, who repeatedly promised to shield the federal retirement program from structural changes.

Speaking at a Breitbart event, the former hedge fund manager framed the new 'Trump accounts'—available to all U.S. citizen children—as a fundamental shift in retirement planning. By suggesting these private accounts could grow to hold hundreds of thousands of dollars, Bessent signaled a move away from the traditional defined-benefit structure of Social Security toward a market-based model.

Democratic lawmakers and advocacy groups were swift to condemn the remarks. Richard Neal, ranking member of the House Ways and Means Committee, called the statement proof that the administration intends to hand Social Security over to Wall Street. Nancy Altman of Social Security Works argued that the administration is systematically undermining public confidence in the agency by gutting staff and promoting inaccurate fraud narratives to justify future intervention.

The timing of these comments compounds concerns regarding the Social Security Administration’s operational capacity. Starting in mid-August, the agency will restrict phone-based services for seniors, a move expected to lengthen wait times for millions of beneficiaries. Critics, including Accountable.US and the Alliance for Retired Americans, view these administrative hurdles alongside the new tax law as a coordinated effort to erode the long-term viability of the Social Security Trust Fund.
