Carrot Top Returns to Luxor Stage, Turns Personal Crisis Into Comedy

Standing before a sold-out crowd at the Luxor Hotel & Casino on October 19, Scott Thompson—known to audiences as Carrot Top—faced his return to the spotlight after a month-long hiatus. The 61-year-old comedian chose to confront his recent suicide attempt directly, weaving the harrowing experience into his signature prop-heavy routine.

The atmosphere in the room shifted from anticipation to a warm, emotional welcome as attendees greeted the veteran performer with a standing ovation. Thompson, who was hospitalized on September 18 following an overdose, spent eight days in medical care before beginning his recovery. Rather than avoiding the subject, he leaned into the tension, joking that those in the front row were the fans who cared most about his recent struggles, while those in the back were likely confused by the elephant in the room—a literal image of an elephant with his trademark red hair projected behind him.

His performance balanced vulnerability with his classic irreverence. During the set, Thompson pulled a noose from one of his prop trunks, quipping that it might be inappropriate, before swapping it for a rubber chicken tied to a rope to draw laughter. This resilience marks his return to a residency he has held at the Luxor since 2005, with a contract currently extending his tenure through 2030. Following a period of private recovery spent with his mother and support from fellow entertainers like Dave Chappelle and Judd Apatow, the comedian signaled that his career, which spans four decades, remains his primary focus.
