Ray first gained public attention in 2016 through a brief, heavily publicized connection to Justin Bieber. Yet, her professional identity was rooted in her own ventures, including the launch of her swimwear label, Sahara Ray Swim, and a career in fashion that began after she moved from Australia to Los Angeles. Raised by professional surfer Tony Ray, she navigated a complex public life that frequently shifted between fashion-forward success and personal volatility.
Her later years were marked by significant physical and mental health challenges. In 2021, she sought treatment for substance abuse, documenting her stay at a Malibu facility. Her recovery efforts were complicated by a severe 2024 car accident, which she reported left her with a Guillain-Barré syndrome diagnosis and partial paralysis. Despite these hardships, Ray appeared to be focusing on motherhood following the birth of her daughter, Snow, in January. Following her death, her mother, Gretchen Bach, described her as a deeply passionate woman whose legacy remains tied to her family, her creative work, and her love for the ocean.
