Producer Nina Jacobson recently addressed concerns regarding the film’s handling of Swayze’s iconic character, Johnny Castle. Speaking at an IndieWire panel, Jacobson emphasized that the creative team is focused on allowing audiences to mourn the actor properly rather than leaning on technology. She explicitly confirmed that they will not use AI to bring Swayze back to the screen, a move that aligns with the sentiments of lead actress and executive producer Jennifer Grey.
Grey, who is returning as Frances “Baby” Houseman, has been vocal about the impossibility of replacing her former co-star. She maintains that while the narrative will feature a new romantic lead, the sequel must stand as a distinct piece of work. The new story, set in the 1990s—roughly forty years after the events of the 1987 original—will see an older Baby return to the Kellerman’s resort, this time transitioning into the role of a mentor.
Despite the pressure of satisfying a protective fan base, the production is moving forward with a cautious timeline. Grey has prioritized quality over speed, refusing to commit to a release date until the script captures the right tone. Filming is currently scheduled to commence in late 2026, with the studio aiming to move past the skepticism that has surrounded the project since its initial announcement.
