Kazee took to Instagram Stories on October 17 to praise Dewan’s resilience, highlighting her grace and composure in the face of the production’s first-ever suspension of a professional dancer. The shift leaves Dewan to perform a Viennese waltz alongside Alan Bersten, who is stepping in to help her honor her mother, Nancy Bursch, during the show’s emotional tribute episode.
This disruption follows Chmerkovskiy’s suspension, which stemmed from a since-deleted post referencing Will Smith’s Oscars slap in reaction to judge Carrie Ann Inaba’s critique of a lift. While Chmerkovskiy has apologized for what he called a poor decision, the fallout has forced an abrupt transition for Dewan. Kazee’s support remains a recurring theme this season, as he has consistently defended Dewan against online criticism regarding her dance background and speculation about her chemistry with partners. As the competition continues, Dewan must now condense her rehearsal timeline to sync with Bersten, maintaining her focus despite the surrounding turmoil.
