Ikea pivots to social commerce with new flagship store on Douyin

Ikea is embedding itself into the digital fabric of the Chinese market by launching an official flagship store on Douyin. The move, spearheaded by Ingka Group, connects the retailer directly to China’s vast short-form video ecosystem, offering over 6,500 products to consumers across 301 cities via the ByteDance platform.

This digital touchpoint serves as a strategic bridge between inspiration and transaction, complementing Ikea’s existing physical footprint, website, and WeChat channels. By entering the content commerce space, the company aims to move beyond traditional retail, transforming how it engages with a tech-savvy demographic that expects seamless connectivity between entertainment and shopping. Lydia Song, Acting CEO and President of Ikea China, noted that the platform provides a unique environment to learn what resonates with local shoppers and ultimately increase the brand’s accessibility.

Parag Parekh, Chief Digital Officer at Ikea Retail, emphasized that the initiative is about meeting customers wherever they congregate. The focus remains on creating a unified omnichannel experience where the boundaries between discovery and purchasing continue to blur. As the company monitors this deployment, it expects to gain insights into how social commerce platforms can further refine its global digital strategy.
