Ultra-Wealthy Philanthropy Hits $250 Billion Amid Shifting Donor Base

Ultra-high-net-worth individuals, defined as those worth at least $30 million, contributed $250 billion to global philanthropy in 2025. This surge represents a 32% increase over 2022 levels, cementing the role of private donors as government and multilateral aid programs continue to retreat from traditional funding landscapes.

While these 557,000 elite donors account for just a fraction of the global population, they represent 38% of total individual giving. According to the High Net Worth Philanthropy 2026 report from Altrata, their contributions have grown by an average of 7.3% annually since 2018, consistently outpacing non-ultra-wealthy donors. North America remains the primary engine of this capital, providing $115 billion, though Europe and Asia are closing the gap with growth rates of 35% and 42% respectively since 2022.

The demographic profile of this donor class is undergoing a significant transformation. By 2040, the proportion of Next-Gen donors—Millennials and Gen Z—is projected to rise from 6% to 37%. Simultaneously, the influence of women in this sector is expanding, with their share of the ultra-wealthy population expected to grow from 12% to 19% over the same period. These groups show distinct behavioral patterns, with women historically recording 1.7 times more gifts than their male counterparts.

Nonprofits must navigate these changes as donor priorities shift toward environmental causes and medical research. To assist in targeting these resources, Altrata’s new Giving Opportunity Index identifies New York, Seoul, and Hong Kong as the top hubs for fundraising. With the global population of individuals worth $5 million or more expected to reach 8.3 million by 2031, organizations that prioritize data-driven relationship building are best positioned to secure future funding.
