The companies are targeting the limitations of traditional additives like coal fly ash and blast furnace slag, which are becoming scarce as industrial processes shift. Urban Mining’s Pozzotive, a pozzolan derived from recycled glass, serves as the initial focus. This material boasts a carbon footprint 93% lower than standard cement while improving the structural durability of concrete.
Because the cement sector operates on a spot market, manufacturers often struggle to secure the long-term capital required to scale novel materials. By decoupling the environmental benefits of the product from the physical goods, these certificates allow producers to trade carbon attributes independently. This mechanism provides a revenue stream that helps mitigate the financial risks of new production facilities, offering a scalable path for buyers to meet climate targets without the logistical hurdles of transporting heavy physical materials.
