Walmart CEO Rejects Dynamic Pricing Amid AI Expansion

Walmart President and CEO John Furner has issued a public commitment to maintain fixed pricing, specifically addressing consumer anxieties regarding the role of artificial intelligence in retail. The executive emphasized that the company will not leverage customer data or shopping history to implement surge or personalized pricing models.

In an open letter to customers, Furner addressed growing concerns that retailers might use predictive AI to capitalize on consumer urgency or individual financial profiles. He reaffirmed the company’s adherence to its long-standing Every Day Low Prices principle, clarifying that product costs—rather than customer characteristics—dictate pricing. The executive specifically addressed the introduction of digital shelf labels, noting they are intended for operational consistency and price accuracy rather than enabling real-time price manipulation.

Beyond pricing, Walmart is expanding its digital footprint through a new partnership with OpenAI. The collaboration integrates fashion retail into ChatGPT, allowing users to visualize clothing via Virtual Try On features and save items to a personalized favorites list. Despite these technological leaps, Furner maintained that the company’s AI shopping assistant, Sparky, will operate under strict data ethics. He pledged that customer interactions with the tool will not be used to inflate prices or obscure more affordable options, framing the technology as a means to provide personalized service rather than an instrument for profit-driven price discrimination.
